Major Quake Hits Mexico

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit southern Mexico Tuesday, giving residents and tourists a scare. The epicenter was logged at 12 miles underground in the state of Guerrero, somewhere near the beaches of Acapulco.

The trembles were felt strongly from Oaxaca until Mexico City, but as of the moment, as announced by Mexican President Felipe Calderon, there are no major damage and casualties due to the quake.

However, telephone service has been interrupted throughout the city. And around 60 homes near the epicenter are reported to have suffered minor damages.


Interestingly, the daughter of US President, Malia Obama is currently on vacation in Oaxaca. However, press reports say that the Barack Obama's daughter is safe and sound.

Kristina Schake, communications director for Michelle Obama, says, "In light of today's earthquake, we can confirm that Malia Obama is safe and was never in danger."

Moreover, despite the relative strength of the quake, there has been no tsunami threat issued for any are, including California, Mexico City and Hawaii.
