World AIDS Day 2012 This December 1

December 1 is the annual global initiative to raise awareness on HIV/AIDS and the World Health Organization (WHO) is continuing its efforts on bringing the infections to zero.

This year's theme is appropriately entitled, "Getting to Zero", and reflects their main objective to have zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS related deaths.

The "zero" goal was first announced last year and will be carried through by WHO until 2015. This year, many organizations are showing support and solidarity towards this goal.

While there has already been active campaigns in creating awareness for the disease, WHO statistics show that cases are still growing. Currently, 34 million people are living with HIV, and 7 million of those are without access to antiretroviral therapy treatment.
