Cinco de Mayo: History, Celebration, Recipes

It is now May 5 in the U.S. and a holiday celebration called Cinco de Mayo is being held. By history, this day commemorates the Mexican army's victory against French forces.

It was on May 5, 1862 that General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin led and won the Battle of Puebla, and this is the reason why Cinco de Mayo is celebrated.

The Battle of Puebla had become significant and important in history because of two primary reason. First, the Mexicans was greatly outnumbered by the French. And two, after this battle, it's been said that no country in the Americas have been invaded by any other European military force.



In the United States, and in some parts of the world, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Many however, mistake this date as Mexico's Independence Day, which rightfully falls on September 16.
